Moroccan startup ‘Clean City’ creates trash collection app

Clean cities - at the tap of a button?

It's not every day that you see a Moroccan social impact startup get recognised on a global platform.

Clean City, a Moroccan startup, was named as one of the top 100 "most exciting Arab startups" by the World Economic Forum.

Clean City's founder, Bout Qaiba, explained the app in an interview with Morocco World News, saying "It’s like Facebook or Instagram, but for the problems citizens are seeing in their cities."

The app facilitates trash collection and public maintenance service. People take pictures of the trash lying on the streets, potholes, broken lights, and such, and post them on the app with a location tag. This is then shared with the authorities. The visual reference and location make it easy for the relevant departments to address the issue and take action.

Moreover, it incentivises users to submit pictures in return for points, which they can use to get free coffee and movie tickets. Naturally, the app had caught on with more than 30,000 users across the world, from France to India, Egypt and more.

The app truly embodies the startup's message: “Protecting our cities is now a shared responsibility." Read more about the app and its successes here.
