Egyptian FoodTech startup Yumamia raises $1.5 million Pre-Series A
Expands into corporate catering and Saudi Arabia.
Startups almost never turn out exactly the way that they initially intended. While their idea might have been in the general direction that it ends up in, there are often too many unforeseen challenges, hurdles and general changes that need to be made and overcome in order to make the idea work.
Careem, the first unicorn exit in the region, is a prime example, as it started out as a corporate chauffeur startup before pivoting into the well-known ride-hailing app it is today. Not only that, often startups expand into different business lines in order to grow their customer base.
Yumamia, founded in 2014 by Belal El Borno, is no different. Originally, the company started out as a food delivery platform to deliver junk-free food prepared by professional chefs to customers in Cairo. However, the company has recently expanded into corporate catering; along with which the Egyptian startup announced the closing of its $1.5 million pre-Series A funding round, led by Saudi Arabia-based Pure Consulting.
With the funding, the startup aims to bolster its corporate catering side of the business, for which it partners with F&B corporates to help them monetise their under-utilised resources by outsourcing entire food preparation operations.
