UAE’s schools are going green

UAE's schools are wearing one colour - that of sustainability - green. They're awarding eco-warriors, kickstarting sustainable initiatives, embracing green values, recycling waste and growing fresh produce.

A school's eco-club aims to carry out environmental campaigns and activities such as clean up and/or tree plantation drives and recycle programs, among others.

As a general and simple practice, the school staff takes collaborative action to curb, recycle and/or segregate waste. Additionally, it is always a good idea to be mindful of litter in the classroom and avoid the use of paper unless necessary.

Include sustainability and agriculture in the curriculum

The year has seen some severe global natural calamities in the form of wildfires, heatwaves, droughts, cyclones and typhoons. They grabbed headlines, were talking points in conversations and drowned in hashtags and Twitter debates. Schools can play a part in educating students not only about the disasters but also by generating awareness about how to tackle such calamities. In this regard, schools should incorporate sustainability-related topics in the academic curriculum.

A school is a large institution that relies heavily on electricity. However, a few schools in the region are entirely or partially solar-powered, so most of the electricity needs are met by solar energy. By doing so, a major environmental concern is battled; carbon dioxide emissions will be decreased gradually.

Workshops, talks, debates - get everyone involved in the larger dialogue. For only when we discuss will we understand, learn, ideate and implement.
