Apple silently releases a Cryptokit for developers

Technology giant enters the crypto space

Since the blockchain and cryptocurrency craze at the end of 2017, there have been more and more announcements by large corporations that are looking to enter the space.

Some are dipping their toes in the water, identifying what the new technology is all about, while others – like Facebook – are allegedly looking to implement the technology further, by launching their own cryptocurrencies or making use of the distributed ledger technology.

However, Facebook and IBM are not the only technology corporations that are looking to be active in the blockchain space. Recently, Apple held its 2019 World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), during which it announced a plethora of new features and product upgrades.

One of the features that was less talked about, was the introduction of a so-called CryptoKit, which might signal the technology and hardware giant’s intentions to enter the space.

It’s too early to say whether Apple is working on its own crypto projects, like an Apple digital coin that would work across its devices and services, but it sure looks like a device like the iPhone could soon act as wallets for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

With the CryptoKit framework, developers will be able to build cryptographic operations right into their apps that are submitted to the App Store. This could, for example, be used to turn iPhones and Macs into secure wallets for cryptocurrency, similar to the feature that Samsung implemented in its Galaxy S10 in February.
