Public transport live tracking, now in India

Google Maps makes public transport more reliable.

While Google faces antitrust probe in the US, it is focusing on its business in India. Its new Google Maps feature has taken transport support to the next level by introducing three new capabilities:

  1. Live status of trains. Google worked with Sigmoid Labs, a local startup it acquired last year, to make this happen.

  2. Bus travel timings in India’s 10 largest cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Chennai, and Bangalore. It is relying on live traffic data and public bus schedules to calculate delays.

  3. Mixed-mode commute suggestions that combines auto-rickshaw and public transport.

This now allows people to seamlessly plan their journeys without having to rely on the (until recently) unreliable public transport. This comes as the most anticipated feature for the eight million Indians who hop on a trains to move through towns and cities to get to work and schools; and for everyone who needs to take multiple travel vehicles to reach their destination.
