Careem moves into food delivery, competes with Deliveroo and Uber Eats

Careem, the UAE-based ride-hailing app that was the first Arab start-up to achieve unicorn status, has recently announced that it is launching its own delivery service, Careem Now. This news came soon after it raised $200 million in October 2018. With its acquisition of the UAE-based food delivery platform RoundMenu in the beginning of 2018, the company is digging its heels in the delivery sector, with plans to expand from food to pharmaceuticals.

With the ever-changing landscape of food delivery, Careem Now is first targeting consumers in Abu Dhabi and Jeddah, before expanding into other markets. With this push, they will provide competition to established food delivery platforms such as Deliveroo and Uber Eats, among others. Read more about Careem’s venture into food delivery, trying to raise $500 million, as well as rumours that it could be acquired by other companies here.
