Can Innovation Solve MENA’s Food Security Challenge?
As climate change, water scarcity, and land degradation continue to put pressure on agriculture across the MENA, organizations in the region are increasingly looking at collaboration as a way to build more resilient food systems.
In line with this, the Arab Authority for Agricultural Investment and Development (AAAID) has signed a MoU with sustainability-focused social enterprise Goumbook to strengthen cooperation in food security, regenerative agriculture, and sustainable agricultural innovation.
The agreement was signed at AAAID’s headquarters in Dubai by His Excellency Dr. Obaid Saif Hamad Al Zaabi, Chairman of the Board of AAAID, and Tatiana Antonelli Abella, Founder and Managing Director of Goumbook.
The partnership aims to support the development of programmes and initiatives focused on sustainable agriculture while addressing some of the region’s key challenges, including desertification, climate change, water shortages, and declining soil health.
As part of the collaboration, both organizations will work together to promote agricultural innovation, support startups and entrepreneurs operating in regenerative agriculture and nature-based solutions, and encourage knowledge sharing through partnerships with universities, research institutions, and international organizations.
The agreement will also support the expansion of the MENA Regenerative Agriculture Initiative, a platform launched by Goumbook to encourage the adoption of regenerative farming practices across the region. The initiative focuses on raising awareness, supporting research, engaging stakeholders, and promoting solutions that can improve the long-term sustainability of agricultural systems.
Commenting on the partnership, Dr. Obaid Saif Hamad Al Zaabi said that food security remains a major development priority across the Arab world and that achieving long-term food security requires collaboration between investors, technology providers, and agricultural experts.
He noted that the partnership with Goumbook brings together knowledge, innovation, and investment to help develop more efficient and sustainable food systems while supporting initiatives that contribute to food security across the region.
Tatiana Antonelli Abella said that transforming food systems requires a combination of traditional agricultural knowledge, modern technology, and regenerative approaches that restore natural resources rather than deplete them.
She added that the agreement creates an opportunity for both organizations to work together on solutions that can strengthen food self-sufficiency, support local economies, and place communities and ecosystems at the centre of agricultural development.
The MoU establishes a long-term framework for cooperation between AAAID and Goumbook, with both organizations aiming to deliver practical outcomes that support more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive food systems across the MENA region.
