Abu Dhabi SMEs Going Global?
For SMEs, finding a clear path to new markets can be a major challenge. But a recent report from the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry offers a glimpse into how the emirate’s economy is creating more opportunities for these very businesses.
The story is told through something called a certificate of origin. While it might sound like a bureaucratic detail, it's actually a vital document that confirms where a product was made. The ADCCI has seen a significant increase in these certificates—a 10.3 percent jump from June 2024 to June 2025. This isn’t just a number; it’s a direct reflection of more companies, including many SMEs, getting their products ready to be sold internationally.
This trend is part of a bigger picture. According to the ADCCI, Abu Dhabi’s non-oil foreign trade grew by a remarkable 34.7 percent in the first half of 2025. This was driven by a massive 64 percent increase in non-oil exports. What’s particularly interesting is that SMEs are playing a bigger role in this growth. The Chamber's report highlights that these smaller businesses are benefiting from initiatives like business matchmaking programs and export training sessions, which are helping them navigate the complexities of international trade.
The products being exported are also quite diverse, coming from sectors like chemicals, metals, and engineering. This shows that Abu Dhabi's economy isn't just relying on one or two industries, but is building a broader base of manufacturing capabilities.
As His Excellency Shamis Al Dhaheri, Second Vice Chairman and Managing Director of the Abu Dhabi Chamber, put it, these indicators show that local companies are competitive on a global scale. He also stressed the importance of certificates of origin as "gateways to broader opportunities," helping UAE exports get a competitive advantage through trade agreements.
Ultimately, this increase in certificates and the overall growth in non-oil trade signal a positive direction for the emirate. It suggests that the initiatives designed to support SMEs and diversify the economy are working, creating a more resilient and dynamic trade environment for businesses of all sizes.
