Delivery Hero acquires Zomato’s UAE food delivery business

Expanding its food delivery portfolio.

Back in 2017, German online food takeaway firm Delivery Hero acquired Middle East food delivery platform Carriage for a reported $100M. This acquisition marked one of the first of multiple large acquisitions in the region, many of which are in the food delivery space. Recently, Delivery Hero announced that it had also acquired the UAE food delivery business of Indian startup Zomato, with which it added roughly 1.2M monthly orders and USD 2M monthly revenue to Delivery Hero’s MENA business and will strengthen its leadership position in the UAE.

Niklas Östberg, CEO of Delivery Hero, commented: “Zomato has built a successful food delivery business in the UAE and India on the back of its restaurant search and discovery app and website. The acquisition will allow us to further improve our service to customers in the UAE. We are also excited to become a shareholder in Zomato’s rapid food delivery growth story in India and share our learnings.“ Furthermore, as part of the acquisition, the German food delivery company agreed to invest a further USD 50M in the latest funding round of Zomato.
