DCT's Innovative Culinary Program: Shaping Future Talent for Dubai's Global Culinary Stage

Dubai College of Tourism introduces an apprenticeship in Culinary Operations, aligning with Dubai Economic Agenda D33. The two-year program, with launch partners Gates Hospitality, Hilton, and JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai, aims to develop skilled entry-level talents for the gastronomic industry. The hands-on curriculum and partnerships with major hotels provide apprentices with valuable learning experiences and networking opportunities, addressing the region's culinary sector challenges.

The Dubai College of Tourism, an integral part of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, is set to unveil the Middle East's first-ever apprenticeship in Culinary Operations. Aligned with the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, this two-year program aims to position Dubai as a top global city for investment, living, and working, with a particular focus on enhancing its gastronomic offerings.

Scheduled to commence this summer, the DCT apprenticeship program seeks to cultivate a highly skilled workforce in culinary arts, specifically targeting entry-level positions. The innovative curriculum, following the nationally approved Certificate 4 in Culinary Operations, features a practical work-study format in collaboration with industry partners, including Gates Hospitality, Hilton, and JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai, with more expected to join soon.

Essa Bin Hadher, General Manager of DCT, expressed the program's ambition to develop a pipeline of skilled culinary talents, emphasizing the dual aspect of learning and earning concurrently. The initiative aligns with DCT's commitment to the D33 agenda, boosting an enhanced ecosystem to nurture local talent and contribute to the region's burgeoning hospitality sector.

The apprenticeship program, spanning two years, integrates hands-on experience within the industry, constituting 60 percent of the curriculum. Students will benefit from a comprehensive education covering gastronomy, business proficiency, safety protocols, critical thinking, and effective communication. Personalised training and mentorship from industry professionals and seasoned chefs within partner establishments will complement the theoretical aspects of the program.

Gates Hospitality's CEO and Founder, Naim Maadad, hailed the program as a platform to keep apprentices abreast of sector trends, emphasizing its role in instilling a strong work ethic, discipline, and time management skills. Sebastian Nohse, Senior Director of Culinary, EMEA Hilton, noted that apprenticeships are proven, successful entry paths into the industry, providing participants with early exposure to the demands of a professional kitchen.

Sergio Snyder, Area Director of Human Resources Premium and Select, Marriott International, anticipates the program addressing key recruitment challenges in the culinary sector. He sees it as an opportunity for Dubai's culinary scene to tap into a vibrant talent pool and acquire staff committed to specific brand standards and operating procedures.

The apprenticeship program reflects DCT's dedication towards talent and innovation, setting a precedent for expansions into other sectors in the future. With the support of major industry partners, this initiative is to make a lasting impact on Dubai's culinary landscape and contribute to its economic aspirations.
