Careem embraces micro-mobility

Acquires bike-sharing startup Cyacle.

Standing true to the rumours, Careem has expanded its ride-sharing business model to the realm of bike-sharing. It announced the acquisition of Cyacle, an Abu Dhabi-based bike-sharing startup that launched in 2014. Although it did not disclose any details of the deal, it did say it will be launching a new standalone app for people to access the new service. The service will also be offered through daily, monthly and yearly memberships.

“This deal means Careem will be able to improve micro-mobility in the region and simplify one of the most important mobility issues – the first and last mile problem. Many journeys are relatively short in distance, including those to and from transportation hubs such as metro and bus stations, so increasing bicycle availability and expanding routes will transform how people commute, as well as offering micro-mobility solutions for short-distance trips.”

Just a short while ago, RTA Dubai announced its partnership with Careem, to launch an app-based bike rental service in Dubai. The plan aims to operate 3,500 bicycles across 350 stations in Dubai.

Over the next 12 months, Careem has plans to introduce micro-mobility solutions to more cities across the region; taking a greener step to strengthen its ride-sharing mobility solutions business. Read more about the acquisition here.
